The US Treasury publishes daily operating cash and debt operations through the Daily Treasury Statement (DTS). This hub focuses on the Treasury General Account (TGA) — the government's primary operating cash balance — and how to read it without confusing cash on hand with the national debt.

Live Tool

The TGA cash balance tracker calls the Fiscal Data API directly in your browser (CORS-open, no API key). Figures originate in millions and are shown in billions for readability. Official source: DTS Operating Cash Balance.

What Moves the TGA

Tax deposits, spending withdrawals, and public debt transactions can swing the balance by large amounts in a single business day. Month-to-date and fiscal-year-to-date columns in the underlying tables help separate a one-day blip from a lasting trend.

Cash Is Not Debt

A high TGA does not mean the national debt disappeared. Cash is a stock of spendable balances; debt is outstanding borrowing. Keep the concepts separate when reading headlines.

Product-level import duty tools live on the US import tariffs hub. Tariff revenue can eventually show up in federal receipts, but HTS product rates and TGA cash balances answer different questions.

How to Use the Tracker

  1. Open the TGA tracker and note the latest closing balance and date.
  2. Compare the day-over-day change.
  3. Read the TGA explainer if you are new to the account.
  4. Use the cash-vs-debt article before sharing a chart out of context.

Reading Tips

Large moves around tax deadlines are common. Always ask whether the driver was receipts, outlays, or financing. The DTS deposit and withdrawal detail can help, even when you only chart the closing balance on this site.

For Students and Analysts

The Fiscal Data API is public. You can reproduce the tracker query with a filter on the TGA Closing Balance account type, sorted by descending record date. That transparency is the point: official numbers, plain explanation, no mystique.

For Business Readers

TGA chatter sometimes appears in markets commentary because cash and bill issuance interact with short-term funding conditions. That macro story is adjacent to — not a substitute for — your company's import duty planning on the tariffs hub.

Update Cadence

The underlying dataset is released on a daily schedule. If the API is temporarily unreachable, the tracker will show an error state rather than inventing a number.
