The Paycheck After Tax Formula

Here's the core formula:

Net Pay = Gross Pay − Pre-Tax Deductions − Federal Income Tax − FICA Taxes − State Income Tax − Post-Tax Deductions

Let's break down each component.

Step 1: Determine Your Gross Pay

Gross pay is your earnings before any deductions.

  • Hourly worker: Hours worked × hourly rate (add overtime at 1.5× for hours over 40 per week)
  • Salaried worker: Annual salary ÷ number of pay periods per year
  • Example: $75,000 salary paid biweekly = $75,000 ÷ 26 = $2,884.62 gross per paycheck

Step 2: Subtract Pre-Tax Deductions

Pre-tax deductions come off the top of your gross pay and reduce the wages that are subject to income tax. The most common:

  • Federal taxable wages: $2,884.62 − $192.31 − $150 = $2,542.31
  • FICA wages: $2,884.62 − $150 = $2,734.62 (401k doesn't reduce FICA)

Step 3: Calculate FICA Taxes

FICA taxes fund Social Security and Medicare. They're calculated on your FICA wages (gross minus HSA/FSA/health insurance premiums, but not 401k):

  • Social Security: 6.2% of FICA wages, up to the $176,100 annual wage base
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all FICA wages (no cap)

Example (continuing from above):

  • Social Security: $2,734.62 × 6.2% = $169.55
  • Medicare: $2,734.62 × 1.45% = $39.65
  • Total FICA per paycheck: $209.20

Important: Once your cumulative wages for the year exceed $176,100, Social Security withholding stops. High earners get noticeably larger paychecks in the latter part of the year for this reason. However, an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies to wages over $200,000 (single) — employers withhold this automatically when you cross the threshold.

Step 4: Calculate Federal Income Tax Withholding

Federal income tax withholding uses IRS Publication 15-T tables. Conceptually, the process works like this:

  1. Annualize your per-paycheck federal taxable wages (multiply by number of pay periods)
  2. Subtract the standard deduction amount from the IRS withholding tables
  3. Apply the federal tax brackets to get annual tax
  4. Divide back down to a per-paycheck amount

  • Tax on remaining $2,625.06 at 22%: $577.51
  • Total annual tax estimate: $6,156.01
  • Per paycheck: $6,156.01 ÷ 26 = $236.77

Step 5: Calculate State Income Tax

State income taxes vary significantly. Some states have no income tax at all; others have rates as high as 13.3%.

No state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming
